Improve your academic performance, pick up priceless experience, and start climbing the corporate ladder. By participating in placement or internship opportunities with the UK and international businesses, you can develop the skills necessary for the graduate job market at Sussex. You can develop your network and acquire experience by doing an internship. An internship may help you land a graduate job because more businesses are including them in their graduate hiring strategies.

A placement is a method to hone your abilities in the business so that you can move on to a variety of careers after graduating from Sussex.

Placements can be useful for:

  • Surpass the competition: For graduate employment and programmes, employers are more frequently seeking appropriate work experience
  • Before you graduate, look into your job alternatives: You'll have a better notion of the industry or employment you might wish to pursue
  • Acquire business and employability abilities: Work on actual projects or learn how to use the tools. Additionally, you'll learn teamwork, communication, and time management skills
  • Create professional networks: A network of contacts will be formed for the future

The student can choose to apply for:

  • A professional placement
  • A research placement, you may be able to do a research placement if you are a high-performing student in a selected science course
  • An integrated placement that is a requirement for a course

The functioning of placements

During your degree, you will work for a company or organisation for a certain period of time. During your time with the company or organisation, you will be a paid employee.

If your placement is for a year, it will begin when you complete Year 2 of your programme. Your degree will be extended if needed, so a three-year course will be completed in four years.

Applying for placements is similar to applying for a job. Although it is a competitive procedure, our Placements Preparation Programme will assist you in identifying your abilities, strengths, and areas of interest so that you may submit the best application possible.

Placements Preparation Programme includes:

  • An online interactive course to get you started – This course is available at any moment throughout your first year of study
  • Discussions with the Placements team for in-depth assistance
  • A series of activities, including a Careers Fair, company recruitment events, and skill development sessions

How to get started

Register for the Placements Preparation Program online or visit the Careers and Employability Centre. The training will assist you in identifying your strengths and gaining an advantage in applications and interviews.

On CareerHub, the university's online job search tool, you can find placement and internship vacancies (both year-round and summer).

I'm currently studying at the University of Sussex. It's a very inclusive campus and from what I've seen so far, it has a friendly and helpful staff. The tuition fees are also quite affordable if you're looking for lower living expenses on your course. I would say that the faculty is really good too.

I am currently studying at the University of Sussex in the UK, and I have to say that it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. The school has a welcoming and inclusive nature, with many opportunities for everyone. It also has a friendly campus, which is great for those who do not like big cities. There are lots of on-campus housing options

I am currently studying at the University of Sussex and I absolutely love it. The people are very helpful, campus is diverse and inclusivity is very important to them. I love the campus because there are so many things to do outside of lectures and during freshers week they organise an awesome schedule full of social events and free talks. The food is also great.
