Your ability to communicate, write, and understand English is critical to your success at Ohio State. Applicants must provide official TOEFL or IELTS Academic test scores to the university:

who do not speak English as a first language, who were educated largely outside of the United States, or who have had permanent residence, asylee, or refugee status in the United States for less than one year from the first term of enrollment.
Score results must be obtained directly from the testing agency (ETS or IELTS) by your application deadline in order to be official.

    • 19 on each section of the paper-based TOEFL
    • 79 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition

  • Duolingo
    • 105 or higher
    • Note: The Duolingo test cannot be used to exempt an admitted student from the English placement exam or the Oral Proficiency Assessment for Graduate Teaching Associates.

First-year and upperclass students share campus housing. Unless excused, space is no longer available, or they are living with relatives, all unmarried, full-time students within two years of high school graduation must reside on campus. The following are some of the benefits of living on campus:
