The University of Toronto was established in 1827 as the King's College and adopted its current name in 1850. It is a collegiate university with eleven colleges and is the oldest in the province of Ontario. Over the years, the University of Toronto (U of T) has consistently been included among the top universities. The institute's position on the list of top universities in the world has gotten better over time.

The University of Toronto is currently ranked 17th by the US News & World Report for the year 2021. This is an improvement above its previous rankings of 20 in 2017 and 18 for 2019 and 2020. In addition to other rating factors, the US News & World Report bases their rankings on the number of publications cited, global research reputation, and regional research reputation (12.5% each). QS The university is placed 25th for 2021 in the World University Ranking. This is far better than its previous ranking of 29 in 2020. For 2020 and 2021, the University of Toronto is placed 18th in Times Higher Education's (THE) University Ranking. The college had previously been ranked 21. While Times Higher Education (THE) accords equal weight to Teaching, Research, and Citations at 30% each, QS places the greatest emphasis on Academic Reputation (40%) followed by Faculty/Student Ratio and Citations per Faculty at 20% each.

A university's reputation among academics or employers is not taken into account by the ARWU (Shanghai Ranking), which has placed the university at number 23 for 2020. Instead, it prefers to rank universities based on the calibre of academic research they produce and the number of Nobel Prizes their staff has won.

Course Ranking

The University of Toronto, one of the best universities in Canada, is well known for its business programmes. In fact, Bloomberg placed the university third in 2019 and seventh in 2020 for Canada's Best Business Schools. For its PG Business and Economics programme, the university is ranked 24th by The Times Higher Education.
